The announcement for the UGC-NET July 2018 exam comes as a relief to several students who were troubled by the UGC decision to suspend the exam last July. The UGC-NET exam was conducted bi-annually in the months of July and in December till last year when it was held only once. SFI had strongly condemned this atrocious measure by the UGC to scrap the exam scheduled for July and December 2017, and holding them together in November. This measure reduces the number of students qualifying the NET and JRF by half. A nationwide campaign was carried out against this move which resulted in several protests to the UGC headquarters in ITO, Delhi. SFI congratulates all the students who participated in our national campaign for the restoration of the bi-annual NET exams. Moreover, the online application forms for the UGC NET 2017 applicants witnessed a hike of 66.66% of hike in its application fee. This processing fee which went double than the hike in previous year which was around 36% making it count as 100% inflation in a year’s time. To add fuel to the fire, the qualifying criteria for the UGC NET exam saw an increased benchmark wherein from 14% of result declaration, now only 6% of them were declared qualified in the National Eligibility Test.
Since UGC NET exam is conducted for over 80 subjects at one go, the team constituting a part of conducting body gets only 5 months’ tenure to take care of all the aspects of the test. Right from carrying out evaluation & result declaration of previous test, the next UGC NET would be ready to be conducted which created hassles.
Moreover, poor attendance of students at an average of hardly 40% taking the test every year further added fuel to the fire which made conducting authorities go in for an annual event which would have proven cost-effective. This move indeed helped and benefited the authorities as it proved to be real convenient to hold the exam once a year with better ratio of students applying to actually taking the test. The earlier issue of low attendance of 40% was resolved as holding the UGC NET 2017 exam last year ensured around 75% candidates turned up and appeared for the exam.
Also, some revised norms and criteria have been introduced in the code of conduct of National Eligibility Test which is most likely to be reflected in this years’ UGC NET July 2018 exam. We wish all the candidates, all the best for the same and keep a tab on the official CBSE external link dedicated for holding UGC NET exam 2018 for all latest updates and details.
