What Is the dMAT Test?
The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardised academic aptitude test introduced for selected Master’s applicants from India.
The test is administered by g.a.s.t. and is separate from APS document verification. Eligible applicants receive a separate dMAT certificate, which becomes part of their APS documentation.
It is important to understand that the dMAT does not replace the APS process. APS India will continue to verify academic documents and assess the formal requirements applicable to the applicant.

Who Needs to Take the dMAT?
The dMAT is not mandatory for every Indian student planning to study in Germany.
It currently applies to selected Master’s applicants whose previous degree falls within the following broad fields:
Affected Fields
- Engineering
- Commerce / Accounting / Finance / Economics
- Business / Management
For eligible applicants in these fields, the dMAT is required as part of the APS documentation for applications relating to the Summer Semester 2027 and subsequent Master’s intakes, unless a transitional exemption applies.
Students with interdisciplinary degrees should carefully check the official APS affected-fields list because classification can depend on the official degree title, branch, major, honours subject or specialisation.
Important dMAT test Dates for 2027
The first dMAT cycle in India has the following schedule:
- 🟢 Registration Opens: 29 June 2026
- 🔴 Registration Deadline: 15 September 2026
- 📝 First Test Date: 26 September 2026
- 📜 Certificate Available: 12 October 2026
The test will be conducted at selected centres across India. APS India currently lists centres including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Bhopal and Mananthavady, with the final available options displayed during registration.
Is dMAT the Same as APS?
No.
This is one of the most important points students should understand.
The dMAT is an additional element of the APS documentation. It does not replace:
- APS document verification
- Academic qualification assessment
- anabin recognition
- German university admission requirements
- German student visa requirements
APS India will continue to verify the authenticity and formal plausibility of academic documents.
A dMAT certificate also does not guarantee admission to a German university. Admission decisions remain with individual German higher education institutions.
Can You Submit APS Documents Before Getting Your dMAT Certificate?
Yes.
This is an important update for students concerned about university application deadlines.
Eligible applicants for the Summer Semester 2027 or later may submit their complete APS application documents before the dMAT certificate is available. APS India can begin the document verification process in advance where possible.
However, the APS certificate cannot be issued until the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.
Students should also remember that all other required APS documents must be submitted with the initial application.
Who May Be Exempt From the dMAT?
Under the current APS procedure, several categories are not required to take the dMAT, including:
- Students applying for Bachelor’s programmes
- PhD applicants
- Applicants whose previous degree is outside the affected fields
- Applicants participating in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university partnership programmes
- Applicants covered by the announced transitional arrangements
Students who completed their APS online registration before 29 June 2026 or shipped their complete APS documents before that date may also be covered by transitional exemptions for that APS procedure.
What Should Students Do Now?
If you are planning a Master’s in Germany, don’t wait until your university application deadline to check whether dMAT applies to you.
Check Your Previous Degree
Look at the official degree title, branch, major and specialisation on your academic documents.
