GATE 2018 Pattern and Marking Scheme : The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati), the organising institute body of GATE 2018 has started the online application process of the same on the official website, gate.iitg.ac.in .
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2018) is scheduled to be conducted on February 3, February 4 and February 10, February 11, 2018 and the registration for the same has started. GATE 2018 Examination Pattern
GATE 2018 would contain questions of two different types in all the papers:
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all the papers and sections. These questions are objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to select (mark) the correct
Negative Marking for Wrong Answers: For a wrong answer chosen in a MCQ, there will be negative marking. For 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.

- Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all the papers and sections. For these questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered by the candidate using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor (keyboard of the computer will be disabled). No choices will be shown for these type of questions. The answer can be a number such as 10 or -10 (an integer only). The answer may be in decimals as well, for example, 1 (one decimal) or 10.01 (two decimals) or -10.001 (three decimals). These questions will be mentioned with, up to which decimal places, the candidates need to make an answer. Also, an appropriate range will be considered while evaluating the numerical answer type questions so that the candidate is not penalized due to the usual round-off errors. Wherever required and possible, it is better to give NAT answer up to a maximum of three decimal places.
There is NO negative marking for a wrong answer in NAT questions.
- All the papers of the GATE 2018 examination will be for 3 hours duration and consist of 65 questions for a total of 100 marks.
- The question paper will consist of both multiple choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer type (NAT) questions
Brief description of papers
- General Aptitude (GA) Questions
In all papers, GA questions carry a total of 15 marks. The GA section includes 5 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub- total 10 marks).
- Question papers other than GG, XE and XL
These papers would contain 25 questions carrying 1-mark each (sub-total 25 marks) and 30 questions carrying 2-marks each (sub-total 60 marks) consisting of both the MCQ and NAT questions.
- GG (Geology and Geophysics) Paper
Apart from the General Aptitude (GA) section, the GG question paper consists of two parts: Part A and Part B.
- Part A is compulsory for all the candidates
- Part B contains two sections: Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geophysics). Candidates will have to attempt questions in Part A and questions in either Section 1 or Section 2 of Part B.
XE Paper (Engineering Sciences)
A candidate appearing in the XE paper has to answer the following:
GA – General Aptitude carrying a total of 15 marks.
Any two of XE Sections B to H
Section A – Engineering Mathematics (Compulsory): This section contains 11 questions carrying a total of 15 marks
Any two of XE Sections B to H
XL Paper (Life Sciences)
A candidate appearing in the XL paper has to answer the following:
GA – General Aptitude carrying a total of 15 marks.
Section P- Chemistry (Compulsory): This section contains 15 questions carrying a total of 25 marks

Marking scheme
- For a wrong answer chosen in a MCQ, there will be negative marking. For 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer. Likewise, for 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer
- There is no negative marking for a wrong answer in NAT questions.
Eligibility criteria for GATE 2018:
BE/BTech/BPharm: Bachelor’s degree in engineering/ technology (Four years after 10+2 or three years after BSc/diploma in engineering/technology) and those who are in the final year of such programmes.
BArch: Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (Five years course)
BSc (Research)/BS: Bachelor’s degree in Science (Post-Diploma/ 4 years after 10+2)
MSc/MA/MCA or equivalent: Master’s degree in any branch of science/mathematics/statistics/computer applications or equivalent
Int. ME/MTech (Post-BSc): Post-BSc Integrated Master’s degree programmes in engineering/technology (Four year programme)
Int. ME/MTech or dual degree (after diploma or 10+2): Integrated Master’s degree programme or dual degree programme in engineering / technology (Five year programme)
Int. MSc/Int BS-MS: Integrated M.Sc. or Five year integrated B. S./ M. S. Programme
Professional Society Examination (equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Arch.): BE/BTech/BArch equivalent examinations of professional societies, recognised by MHRD/ UPSC/ AICTE (e.g., AMIE by Institution of Engineers-India, AMICE by the Institute of Civil Engineers-India)
GATE 2018 Important Dates:
- Last date for submission of online application: October 5
- Last date for request for change in the choice of examination city: November 17
- Availability of admit: January 5
- GATE 2018 online examination dates: February 3, February 4 and February 10, February 11, 2018
- Announcement of results: March 17, 2018.
Examination schedule Released for GATE 2018, check now
Check the examination schedule on the official website of GOAPS. The results will be announced on March 17, 2018.
The notification regarding the examination schedule for GATE 2018 on the official website has been released.
GATE 2018 examinations for 23 papers will be conducted across eight sessions from February 3, 2018 to February 11, 2018.
The examination will be held in two shifts –forenoon 9 AM to 12 PM and in afternoon 2 PM to 5 PM.
The papers which will be conducted during the mentioned days on the website are as follows:
- February 3: ME, EY, PE, XE, XL from 9 am to 12 pm
- February 3: ME, AE, MA, PI from 2 pm to 5 pm
- February 4: CS, MN from 9 am to 12 pm
- February 4: AG, AR, BT, CH, CY, GG, IN, MT, PH, TF from 2 pm to 5 pm
- February 10: EC from 9 am to 12 pm
- February 10: EE from 2 pm to 5 pm
- February 11: CE (two sessions) from 9 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm
