Will NEET 2018 be tougher than 2017? What are the Expected Changes?
With NEET being the only gateway to enter medical colleges in India, a lot of speculations are underway regarding its level of difficulty, nature of questions, expected changes, etc. for the upcoming year. But before going into the intricacies for the year 2018, we must know the previous year trends of the question papers.
NEET Expected Changes: 2017 v/s 2018
There has been no official notification as of now regarding any changes in NEET Eligibility, pattern, structure and syllabus. However, sighting the unpredictability of this exam, it is expected that NEET might throw some surprise elements for the test takers as far as the level of difficulty is assumed.
Based on the trends of the past two years, National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test might have the following elements in store for the examinees:
As far as the difficulty level is concerned, NEET might be moderately difficult as has been in the past two years. But there is still some sort of uncertainty as the number of test takers will be two-fold, so the level of difficulty can increase as well.
The paper pattern might not undergo any major changes. It will consist of questions from both class 11 and class 12. Till now questions were asked from the NCERT recommended syllabus only, however, since NEET is the only centralized exam for admission to MBBS/BDS programs across Indian Universities, therefore, we might expect inclusion of state board syllabus as well.
As per the analysis performed for NEET 2016 and NEET 2017, Physics section has been the toughest call till now. The questions from this section are most difficult to attempt. The topics which are focused upon majorly in Physics are electrodynamics, thermodynamics. Also, previous year observations show rise in number of questions from Modern Physics.
Chemistry will be an easy do for those who are clear with each and every concept thoroughly. Questions may be posed from NCERT syllabus as well as syllabus of some other state board.Ever since the commencement of NEET exam, Biology section has seen average level of difficulty. With balanced count from both class 11 and class 12, questions are averagely difficult.
NEET 2017 attracted a lot of criticism from the test takers and many state governments. The debacles included allegations of paper leak, rigid dress codes and varying difficulty levels in vernacular languages. Keeping these setbacks in clear view, CBSE is expected to take corrective measures.
Although there are no clear directives for international aspirants, it is likely that similar to JEE and GATE, NEET might also get international recognition. CBSE can include international test centers.
NEET 2017 Analysis
Overall Difficulty Level: Moderate- Difficult
The major analysis of NEET 2017, which was conducted on May 7, 2017 shows that the paper was of moderate difficulty. However, it was slightly difficult and lengthier when compared to previous year.
As per the appearing candidates and experts, Physics section was the toughest of all, chemistry being moderately difficult while Biology had questions of moderate difficulty. The distribution of questions from NCERT Class 11 and Class 12 was balanced with equal weightage to both the levels.
Questions in physics were numerical based, so it took half the allotted time sighting the length and difficulty. Most of the questions were from Heat and Thermodynamics, Electrodynamics, Modern Physics, etc.
Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry were major topics covered in the Chemistry section in 2017 edition of the exam. The questions were less tricky as compared to that in the previous year.
Biology was not a tough call for applicants. The questions were based on the syllabus of NCERT with moderate level of difficulty. Those who lost in Physics had an opportunity to cover it up in this section. The important topics from Biology as inferred from the question paper were- Human Physiology and Plant Physiology.
NEET 2016 Phase 2 Analysis
Overall Difficulty Level: Moderate
After the directives by Supreme Court, CBSE restructured NEET and conducted the exam in second phase on July 24, 2016. The exam came as a pleasant surprise for the test takers.
Physics, which is otherwise considered as the most difficult of all, was comparatively easy with only 6 difficult questions out of the total 45. The maximum number of questions were posed from electrodynamics, followed by Thermodynamics and Optics.
In the year 2016, Chemistry was a difficult nut to crack for many candidates. As per the student’s review, Organic chemistry was a bit tricky part. Although 50% of the total questions were moderately difficult, but 9% hard questions took a toll on overall performance of the candidates.
Biology was the savior for most candidates. Students rated this section as the easiest and fared well in this section at least. The maximum percentage of questions were from Human Physiology and Animal Husbandry.
To conclude, the difficulty level will remain more or less the same. In the last 7 years, CBSE has gradually increased the difficulty level. The only thing one need to understand is that unlike other competitive exams, NEET has its own difficulty level. So, there is no question of it being easier or tougher. What makes a difference is how well you prepare for the exam. The better you prepare, the more chances you have of scoring well. So, our suggestion would be to put your best foot forward, do the best you can and ace that exam.
