For students with disabilities, York University in Toronto is making the journey to a successful career more accessible and promising. Thanks to a generous $500,000 investment from Embark Student Corp., York University is launching a groundbreaking initiative to support students with disabilities as they transition into the workforce.
This initiative will provide a wealth of career-focused resources. Students will have access to tailored career counseling, employer networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and advocacy tools designed to break down barriers and open doors to meaningful employment.
“We are thrilled to partner with an organization like Embark that is so dedicated to making a positive change by advancing post-secondary career supports and inclusivity,” said York University Director of Career Education and Development Bob Eichvald. “As a leader and innovator in promoting accessibility, York University is expertly positioned to create and direct programs designed to address these distinct needs.”
This dedication to supporting students with disabilities is part of York University’s broader mission to create a more inclusive and equitable society. The University’s Academic Plan defines its commitment to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. York University was just selected by the UN from over 1,700 member institutions as the Hub Chair for Reducing Inequality. It has proven its deep commitment to breaking down systemic barriers and empowering students from all backgrounds to succeed.
Embark Student Corp. launched its Major Grant Program in 2023 to fund innovative projects that enhance student success before, during, and after post-secondary education. This year, Embark awarded grants between $250,000 and $500,000 to five post-secondary institutions across Canada—York University receiving the highest amount.
“These are challenging times for students and our educational ecosystem,” said Andrew Lo, President and CEO of Embark. “Through the Embark Major Grant Program, we aspire to support innovation and make education more accessible, affordable, and better for all.”
For many students with disabilities, the transition from education to employment presents unique challenges. Studies show they face nearly twice the unemployment rate and earn, on average, 5.5% lower wages.
York’s new initiative aims to change that. By providing targeted career development services and fostering strong connections with inclusive employers, the program will help level the playing field and ensure that students with disabilities enter the workforce with confidence and support.
For students with disabilities considering studying in Canada, York University should be a top choice due to its strong commitment to accessibility and career readiness. York University is setting a standard for building universities where all students can embark on a future without limits.
